Helping Seniors in Need Live in Dignity & Independence

Foundation to close
with a heavy heart that I tell you that the Board of Directors has announced
that the all-volunteer Senior Life Foundation is projected to close this
year. This has been an incredibly difficult decision, particularly because 2014
was the best in our 15-year history. It will
be business as usual until all funds have been expended for their intended
purpose. Low-income seniors with urgent needs are encouraged to call our
Emergency Help Line at 904-268-9128.
a hard question because SLF has an outstanding team of donors and partners, a
full complement of programs designed to meet the urgent needs of low-income
seniors, and because the need for our services still exists in Duval County.
The answer is simply that many of our volunteers are aging and now facing
serious health issues and other challenges of their own. The work of the Senior
Life Foundation requires an extraordinary volunteer commitment and those
resources are scarce.
have thought that a small group of retired people kicking ideas around 15 years
ago would create what has become the Senior Life Foundation, a premium provider
of help to the elderly. For the most part, we were professionals who had
enjoyed long and successful careers. We were motivated only by our genuine
concern for our fellow human beings in need and dedicated days, nights and
weekends to find ways to help those who could no longer help themselves.
filled with pride as I look back over the accomplishments of the past 15 years.
Since 2000, the Senior Life Foundation has provided direct assistance to more
than 5,000 low-income seniors with urgent needs and paid out over $1,000,000.
Our first donation was $500; last year’s donations totaled $218,732. Our first
program was the Emergency Help Line,
which was soon followed by the Annual
Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon, which has served thousands of seniors
a holiday meal.
past five years, our programs have multiplied to include Savings Our Seniors Energy, Angels of Mercy
Spreading Comfort (distribution of fans and heaters), Bringing the Gift of Music to Duval County Senior
Centers, Clear Sight for Seniors, Clean Houses for Seniors and AfterCare for Seniors.
and I thank our incredible donors, partners and friends. We could not have come
this far without you, and it is with great sadness that we say farewell. We
hope that you will continue make low-income seniors your passion and purpose.
These seniors are proud, decent, good people who deserve to have their dignity
and independence, but who are no longer able to help themselves.
